Stratosphere & Echo Chamber
大氣的「同溫層」英文是stratosphere，但網路上把「只與自己觀點相同的圈內人對話，相濡以沫，但對不同的主張卻充耳不聞」叫「同溫層現象」。這種「同溫層現象」較接近英文的 echo chamber effect，香港媒體稱之為「回音室效應」。
地球的大氣層(0 - 100公里)又可分為好幾層，離我們最近的，0至11公里，是「對流層」(troposphere)，人類就生活在這一層。空氣密度最大、壓力最高。隨著高度增加，氣壓逐漸減少，溫度不斷下降。
「對流層」之上有「平流層」 (stratosphere)，11至50公里，溫度不隨高度升高而變化，因此又稱「同溫層」。平流層上方有「中氣層」 (mesosphere)，再往上則是「增溫層」(thermosphere)，100公里處為大氣層與太空的分界線，以上就是「太空」(space)。
Stratosphere (同溫層/平流層) 雖非地球大氣層 (atmosphere) 的最高層，英文卻常見用來比喻「極高」，譬如：stratospheric success 極為成功/高度成功； stratospheric valuation 估值高不可攀。又如以下數例：
Nice looking but the price is stratospheric. 好看，但價格高得離譜。
I would give it a 5 for fit and quality, but the price is stratospheric for a T shirt, so I had to take a star off. 以品質、舒適而言，我會給它五顆星…但價格實在太高 …只好拿掉一顆。
