消化性潰瘍 (peptic ulcer) 是胃潰瘍 (gastric ulcer) 及十二指腸潰瘍 (duodenal ulcer) 兩者的合稱，指有胃酸、胃蛋白酶、消化液覆蓋部位的黏膜 (mucous membrane)、組織缺損。胃潰瘍及十二指腸潰瘍是最常見的消化性潰瘍。
Gastric and duodenal ulcers are two kinds of peptic ulcers. A peptic ulcer is a sore that's on the inside of the stomach lining — a gastric ulcer, or the upper part of the small intestine — a duodenal ulcer. A person can have one or both types of ulcers at the same time. Having both types is known as gastroduodenal.
去年 12月底，可能喝熱湯太急了點，腸胃道燙傷而不自覺。後來又喝過幾次檸檬汁及nightcap (睡前酒)，加上吃了一段時間降血脂的Aspirin，壓垮駱駝的最後一根稻草則是吃了朋友送的自製辣椒醬。雖然只是heartburn，飯後輕微不適，但之前有過兩次消化性潰瘍，不敢大意。幸好12月31日北醫腸胃專家潘憲醫師有看診，但預約掛號早已額滿。31日上午8.00網路開放保留名額掛號，終於掛號成功。
30年來兩次消化性潰瘍都是潘醫師仁心仁術幫我醫治好的。之前潰瘍是幽門螺旋桿菌 (Helicobactor pylori) 感染造成，這次他判斷是輕微消化性潰瘍、胃食道逆流 (gastro-esophageal reflux disease, GERD )，沒那麼嚴重，因此不必照胃鏡。只要規規矩矩吃藥，兩個月後應會恢復正常。
幽門螺旋桿菌的學名第一個字 Helicobactor 源自 helix (螺旋) 與 bakterion (細物)，第二個字pylori源自 pylorus (gatekeeper) 指胃與十二指腸之間的幽門 (the opening between the stomach and the duodenum)。Helicobactor前三音節與直升機 helicopter 一樣，字源都是 helix (螺旋)，helicopter的後半段則源自pteron (翼)。 (Jerome Su, Jan 15, 2019)
