美國母親節由安娜‧賈維斯 (Anna Jarvis,1864－1948) 發起，1913年美國國會將每年5月的第二個星期日定為母親節，目前將近80個國家在這天慶祝母親節，而安娜‧賈維斯的母親生前最愛的 carnation (香石竹/康乃馨) 也成了母親節的象徵。
康乃馨係園藝商從英文 carnation 音譯而來，它在植物學上稱為「香石竹」，學名 Dianthus caryophyllus 第一個字 Dianthus，意思是 divine flower (神聖之花)，源自希臘文dios (divine) 與 anthos (flower)。(The scientific name of carnation is Dianthus Caryophyllus. Dianthus is derived from the Greek words for divine ‘dios’ and flower ‘anthos’. )
之前介紹綬草 (Spiranthes chinensis) 和流蘇 (chionanthus retusus) 的學名時提過，學名中出現 anthes, anthos, anthus 等詞幹，都是指「花」意思，Norton Anthology 的 anthology 也是「花的結集」的意思。
至於英文名稱 carnation，有學者認為是 coronation (加冕) 的訛轉。(Some scholars believe that the name ‘carnation’ comes from ‘coronation’ … it is a corruption of coronation, from the flower's being used in chaplets (花冠) or from the toothed crown-like look of the petals.)
在漢字文化圈裡傳統代表母親的花是萱草 (Hemerocallis fulva)，古稱諼草，《詩經‧衛風》：「焉得諼草，言樹之背，願言思伯，使我心痗。」唐‧孟郊〈遊子詩〉：「萱草生堂階，遊子行天涯；慈母倚堂門，不見萱草花。」
萱草台灣俗稱金針花，英文名字叫 orange daylily，學名 Hemerocallis 是由希臘文 hemera (Day) 及 kallos (Beauty) 所組成，即「一日美人」，指它的花於日出開花，日落凋謝，只開一天的意思。隔日在同一花莖上會有另一朵金針花綻放。(Jerome Su, May 9, 2019)
