Pride and Prejudice

Pride & Prejudice is absolutely a story to stay forever. While reading this book, I was amazed by the realistic descriptions of each character. Elizabeth, a woman proud of her own judgement, was insulted by Mr. Darcy when they met for the first time. Since then, Elizabeth had lost her judgement and had a prejudice against Mr. Darcy, and even refused his proposal angrily at first. Mr. Darcy, considered an impolite genius, was actually a gentleman, a kind master, and a nice brother. However, due to his pride and indifferent attitude to the Bennets at the beginning, it was very hard for him to change the impression he had made on Elizabeth, the one he strongly admired. Fortunately, Elizabeth discovered the gentle character of Darcy, and was brave and sensitive enough to face her prejudice against Mr. Darcy, and found that he was exactly the one who understood and matched her the best.

In the very beginning of the book, it says “Everyone knows that a single man with a large fortune needs a wife.” It directly clarifies the main story lines of this book: money and love. To be honest, this is a story about the struggles between those two elements. Elizabeth and Jane considered “love” the core value of marriage, but their friend, Charlotte was obviously not the same, choosing material security. At first, I thought the marriage of Charlotte and Mr. Collins was a tragedy, and also was a kind of humiliation to Elizabeth. But soon, through the words of Charlotte herself, I’ve started to realize the reason behind this decision, and recovered from the shock. I sympathized her a lot, because we all know that there will be no mental happiness in her future life.

The vivid figures and lively dialogues makes the story seemed like it’s entirely real. For example, the vulgar, annoying mother, Mrs. Bennet, gave me the first impression as if she were a cruel and crazy person, because all she thought about was to find her daughters wealthy husbands, and didn’t care if her daughters would be happy or not. However, there’s no denying that marriage is the only way to guarantee a girl’s fortune in that era. It was so heartbreaking, but it’s so real. If you ask me what I like most of this book, my answer will be that all the anxious plots that gripped my heart is the biggest attraction of the story.

What I learn most in this story is that we should never judge anything before we truly know it. Elizabeth misjudged Mr. Darcy, for she was unwilling to know more about him; Jane almost missed her true love because of the lack of information; I misunderstood Mrs. Bennet and Charlotte for not realizing the background of the era.

The author used elegant words to present ordinary happiness and also brought out all the doubts and fear by trifles and dialogues which bring every roles to live. I would like to say that this is my honor to read such a book that has stood the test of time.
