In the age of globalization, cultural hybridity has become a common phenomenon. As a result, the notion of “glocalization” has been posited as the key to understanding the dynamics that underlie everyday praxis in our age. As one of the major contemporary ecumenical modes of expression, the English language has been avoiding its true destiny as a lingua franca, suppressing the phenomenon of cultural hybridity in its pedagogy until recently. However, it is time for a paradigm shift in how English is taught and how English proficiency is assessed.
To promote discussion from diverse perspectives on these crucial issues, the LTTC hosted an international conference on “Critical Reflections on Foreign Language Education: Globalization and Local Interventions.” The invited speeches and selected papers from the conference are gathered in this volume. The chapters in this book cover the three main themes: The first section examines the role of English as an international language and challenges current paradigms in language education; the second section explores several aspects of current language teaching pedagogy; the third section presents new perspectives on language testing and assessment.
